Galíndez LLC, recently presented the 2025 HFMA Annual Update, delivering an insightful session titled Healthcare Industry Update – Hospitals’ Financial Condition. This shift has transformed hospital case mixes toward higher-cost, less profitable care, putting increasing strain on institutions.
The presentation also highlighted practical elements of hospital finance, including comparisons between Puerto Rico and U.S. hospitals, the impact of reduced admissions and bed capacity, and the structural differences across acute, psychiatric, and rehabilitation hospitals. Using Galíndez’s proprietary scoring system, the analysis revealed many hospitals operating on thin or negative margins, with low occupancy rates, liquidity concerns, and equity disparities creating significant financial pressure.
Attendees also explored concepts such as the need to modernize payment models—moving away from per-diems toward diagnosis-based reimbursement—and the importance of strengthening governance, implementing real-time financial monitoring, and investing in technology such as electronic health records (EHR). The discussion emphasized that long-term success requires not just financial strategies, but also adaptability, collaboration with physicians, and the pursuit of innovative funding sources like investment alternatives under Puerto Rico’s Law 60.
