20 Oct Big News for Future CPAs: Puerto Rico Updates CPA License Requirements
The path to becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in Puerto Rico just became more accessible. The Puerto Rico Board of Accountancy has announced an important change that allows candidates to sit for the CPA exam with 120 university credits, as long as 24 of those credits are in accounting.
This update removes the previous requirement of 150 credits and 32 accounting credits before taking the exam, giving aspiring professionals the opportunity to start their certification journey earlier.
A related measure, Senate Bill 642, is currently moving through the legislative process and is expected to be signed soon by the Governor. Once enacted, the law will officially amend the Puerto Rico Public Accounting Act to grant CPA licenses under the following criteria:
- 120 university credits, including 24 in accounting, and two years of experience
- Candidates who already meet 150 credits and 32 accounting credits will continue to qualify with just one year of experience
All candidates must still pass the four parts of the CPA exam, maintaining the profession’s high standards while streamlining the path to certification.
At Galíndez LLC, we welcome this development as a meaningful step toward strengthening Puerto Rico’s accounting profession. By opening the door to more students and early-career professionals, this change supports a stronger pipeline of qualified accountants who will serve businesses, communities, and the public sector.
